It’s no secret that regular department store shampoos are not the best for hair. They have all kinds of sulfates and chemicals that will strip hair of its natural oils and cause it to break off. They also cost an arm and a leg.

DIY shampoos have a mountain of benefits. They are an often times more natural, safer, and smarter investment in time and money. If ingredients are bought in bulk and stored properly, making your own shampoo can be a cheap, fulfilling experience that leads to happy, healthy hair.

One amazing product to include in your natural shampoo is coconut oil.

Here’s why:

It can be used as a conditioner. It’s the only mineral proven to reduce protein loss, unlike sunflower or mineral oil. It will strengthen hair as it softens it as well.

It can improve hair growth and reverse hair loss. The essential nutrients, including the lauric acid, penetrates the hair shaft and improves the overall health of the hair.

It can cure dandruff. Dandruff is often a result of dry scalp conditions and can be easily corrected given that the scalp is provided the proper moisture. If not dry scalp, it can be a product of yeast-like fungi. The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil have strong antiviral and antifungal properties to help rid hair of the fungi.

So, we’ve learned that coconut oil is great for the hair. Now what?
